The Great Commission, Have you heard of it?
November 5th, 2007 by mergingfilmsWE ARE FAILING THE GREAT COMMISSION. I heard Keith Green say from a live CD that if the church was doing its job then there would be no need for welfare. Now, saying welfare is needed or not is a different debate, but what i think is important in this statement is what Keith is saying about us and the great commission. I believe we are failing the great commission.
At a former church i once served at as a youth pastor I heard a phrase used several times that struck my heart with sadness. “Our church will never grow with these youth in our church. Now what hurt me in this statement is not the part of them talking bad about my youth, but because what they were really saying is our church wont grow because there are unchurched students coming. Now, if i remember correctly, in matthew, jesus says hat he is for the lost. A hospital is for the sick. Jesus is here for the unchurched. And we as christians are here for the unchurched. if our church is not about reaching the lost, then let me say the church has failed at the great commission. Yes the church is for the equipping of the saints. But then the saints are suppose to go out to the world and love on them and show the way. When you get equipped it is for a task and the task for the saints is the great commission, not the christina subculture that has somehow become so popular. If your a christian RUN from the christian subculture, cause there wont be the unchurched there. Run to the bars, the concerts, and the sporting events. Don’t be afraid to throw a party and get unchurched people to your place, so you can then fulfill the great commission. I really believe Jesus was here he would be doing a lot of temple cleaning like he did in the gospels. He would not be happy with state of the church today. I believe God is moving is hand away from some churches cause they are more worried about their traditions then the lost people behind there church. This brings me to another sick story, which i am almost embarrassed to tell but it is a true story. My first church i served held monthly deacons meetings. Well this particular one, one of the discussions they had, wow i cant believe i am even about to say this, was about creating an umbrella team. Lets get a few select guys to walk ladies to their cars with umbrellas. they have good intentions, but their hearts in the wrong place. As christians they should do that without a team, should be instinct. As a deacon who creates teams and outreach, they need to be focusing on the lost that are in the neighborhood behind the church. This church was more worried about and umbrella team then winning at the great commission. Let’s stop worrying about traditions. Lets stop worrying about creating umbrella teams, unless that umbrella is covering a lost person. Lets stop worrying about what makes us look good as a person or a church. Lets stop failing at the great commission and lets reach out
